Where is everyone? |
When you and Kimi get to your room, she suggests that you obtain an item that would help you find your way around. |
There is a lodge brochure in the curio cabinet's drawer. |
Type the following text parser commands: "Open drawer", "Search drawer", "Take lodge map", "Look at lodge map." The same map is shown at the top of this online hintbook! |
Visit all the rooms on the map and type "Talk to people" (or their names) when you meet someone! |
Where is everyone, specifically? |
Kimi is in Guest Bedroom 1, Margot is in the room south of Innkeeper's Quarters. Albert is in Servant's Quarters. Nessa and Corvus are in the Parlour. Nathan and Evan are in the Conservatory. Jack is in the Kitchen. |
How can I make time pass after dinner? |
After dinner, Mr. Richards suggested something you can do to help out. That would pass the time! |
You can pass time in the kitchen, if you make yourself useful. |
Go to the kitchen and type "help Jack". |
How can I listen at the boudoir door? |
Walk up to the door and type “listen”. Nancy has an idea about that! |
Mr. Richards is in the conservatory, you can “ask about listening”. |
You can also ask him about glasses, if you’re not sure where to find one! |
The drinking glasses are in the upper cupboard to the right of the stove. |
Walk close to the Boudoir door and "listen with glass." |
Are there conversations I can miss? |
Yes! Sometimes characters will mention they will be meeting somewhere to chat later. You can also try wandering around the lodge a bit during different points in the game, especially near doors or doorways. You may stumble into a conversation! |
Nathan and Evan mention during their conservatory conversation that they will meet in the study after dinner. |
Maybe you can find a place to conceal yourself in the study after dinner! |
Enter the study right after dinner and type "hide behind tapestry." |
Nessa and Corvus also have a couple conversations in the bar after dinner. |
One of Nessa's and Corvus' conversations in the bar happens right after dinner. You need to find a good place to listen! |
You can listen to the conversation from the hallway if you open the door and type "Listen" near the doorway. |
You can listen to the second conversation right after you help Jack with the dishes. |
Are there fun things I can miss ? |
Yes! Did you try taking a shower in the pink bathroom at the end of the hall? |
To shower: Walk up to the bathtub, type "turn on water", "pull valve", and "remove clothes". Don't forget to lock the door! |
You can "spin" in the chair in the study after you've sat upon it. Seconds of frivolity! |
You can "drink whisky" in the dining room, but please enjoy responsibly! |
You can "take almonds" in the parlour. You can also try giving them to the other characters. |
You can tell the other characters about mineralogy and geology! |
You can ask the other characters all sorts of questions: Guests, parents, continent, land claim, inn, and more! |
Can you find the blue cup in the game, which is the logo for Adventure Game Studio (the engine The Crimson Diamond is made with!)? |
The blue cup/mug is in the cupboard closest to the west wall. "Examine mug" after you've taken it to see the version number of AGS I'm using! |
Where do I have to go at the beginning of the chapter? |
Kimi says you should meet her at the front door (the door you entered the lodge by). |
Can I miss anything on the way to meet Kimi? |
You might want to stray near the other doors in the upstairs hallway... |
In a section of the upstairs hall, there are doors to the left (Guest Bedroom 3) and right (Servant's Quarters) that you can eavesdrop at. "Listen with glass" to hear the conversations! |
I'm back from the train station. What now? |
You have your work cut out for you! You need a little shovel, a geologist's pick, a little hammer, and a streak plate. You need to gather 3 samples from outside. |
How can I obtain a streak plate? |
Where's a good place to find a plate of some kind? |
Try one of the kitchen cupboards. |
Open the cupboard above the sink in the kitchen. Take a plate, and then look at it. You now have your streak plate! |
How can I obtain a geologist's pick? |
You'll have to improvise! Another type of pick might do the trick. Talk to Jack, he might know of something! |
Now that you're back from the train station, you can find Jack in the Study. |
Go to the kitchen. Do you notice anything different from the previous night? |
There's a puddle underneath the icebox. The ice seems to be melting! Maybe you can help it along. |
You'll need to melt the ice more. |
Only hot water will do the trick. |
Take the kettle. Open the icebox and pour the water on the ice. Take the handle. Presto! |
How can I obtain a little shovel? |
Perhaps a gardening tool will do the trick! Where might you find something like that? |
Check the Garden Shed. You'll find it if you go outdoors from the Kitchen and go east another screen. |
Look at the shelf. You'll see a trowel! |
How can I obtain the first sample? |
You'll need a little shovel to do that (see above hints). |
Look for a place with potentially softer ground to dig. |
Trying digging the riverbank by the Jetty, the Bridge, or the Boathouse |
How can I obtain the second sample? |
You'll need to find and use an item to distract Kimi away from the cliff. |
Look in the Jetty area for the item. |
Look in the log. Ooh, a whistle! More accurately, it's a duck call. |
Blow the whistle while standing near Kimi. She'll run off looking for ducks and you'll be free to get the sample! |
How can I obtain the third sample? |
You'll need a hammer and an improvised pick to obtain this sample. |
Albert's conducting his own fieldwork. It's time to pay him a visit! You'll need to figure out a way to make him leave the area. |
This would be a good time to use Nancy's curiosity and enthusiasm about rocks to achieve your goal. Pester Albert! |
Ask Albert about the boulder. He'll get fed up with you and leave. |
What do I do with the samples? |
Look at the samples, examine them, and rub them against the plate. They can be referred to in a number of ways. Here are a few: "river sample", "cliff sample" and "boulder sample". |
At some point, you should get a prompt to "Ask Albert about kit". Once you've completed all of the above and this step, you should get a prompt to go to the dining room. |
Can I miss anything during this section? |
Once you've returned from the train station, Evan and Jack are having a conversation in the Study. You can eavesdrop on this chat using the glass. |
When the conversation is over, enter the Study and take the tape you see in the fireplace. |
If you've taken the Jordan almonds in the parlour, you can try rubbing them on the plate for fun! |
There are other items in the Garden Shed you can pick up that will be useful in later chapters. |
The Garden Shed contains the trowel, a rope (hanging on the wall) and a flypaper box. |
Examine and open the flypaper box for some interesting information. |
What should I do with the broth? |
Jack asks that you go upstairs to the Boudoir and give the bowl to Margot. Don't forget to return the bowl to Jack when it's empty! |
After you give the bowl to Margot, there's an opportunity to listen in on a conversation between her and Nessa. There are two ways to do this. |
The first way: Leave the room, watch Nessa cross the room and enter the Boudoir, locking the door behind her. Listen to the door with the glass. Once Nessa has left, retrieve the bowl and take it back downstairs and give it to Jack, |
The second way: Give Margot the broth and walk behind the dressing screen. Watch the conversation between Margot and Nessa, then retrieve the bowl and take it back downstairs and give it to Jack. |
Can I miss anything during this section? |
You can "ask Margot about aches", for a bit of information that will be useful later. You can also "ask Margot about allergies". |
What does Nessa want me to do at the start of Chapter 3? |
Nessa wants you to examine her jewellery box. Take a look! |
Fingerprinting kit: You'll need a powdery substance to reveal fingerprints and a suitable container to contain it, and an adhesive to lift the fingerprints. |
What kind of adhesive can I find to lift fingerprints? |
There's a roll of zinc adhesive plaster somewhere in the lodge. |
It's stored in a drawer. |
It's stored in the nightstand drawer in Evan's and Margot's bedroom (the Innkeeper's Quarters) |
What powdery substance should I get? |
You'll want a dark, powdery substance. |
Check one of the fireplaces in the lodge for a suitable substance. |
Walk up to the fireplace in Guest Bedroom 1, the Innkeepers Quarters, or the Study, and "take soot". |
How can I properly contain the powdery substance? |
You need a container with holes in the top to dispense it. Something like a tin of face powder! Where would be a good place to find something like that? |
Check Margot's Boudoir. "Take tin." "Refill tin with soot." |
Once you've completed your fingerprint kit, you'll need to obtain fingerprints from everyone in the lodge and also the curio cabinet and Nessa's jewellery box. Once all of that's complete, you'll need to "Compare fingerprints". |
Some of these are fairly straightforward. "Dust curio for fingerprints" followed by "Lift fingerprint from curio". Other will require a bit more brainpower! |
How do I obtain Margot's fingerprint? |
There's an item in her Boudoir that she's touched. |
You can get Margot's fingerprint from the glass in her Boudoir. |
How do I obtain Nessa's fingerprint? |
You're trying to help her, so she should be pretty cooperative! Just ask her for it. |
How do I obtain Corvus' fingerprint? |
He should be in Guest Bedroom 2, time to pay him a visit! |
Corvus seems uncooperative, but maybe he's discarded something with his fingerprint on it. |
"Look in trash" and "take paper". |
How do I obtain Evan's fingerprint? |
You won't be able to obtain Evan's fingerprint until he's gotten out of bed and left the room. This happens after you've obtained one other fingerprint. |
Evan's in the Billiards Room. Here's your chance! |
You'll need Evan to touch the cue ball before you can get his fingerprint. |
He won't let you touch the cue ball unless it's in a pocket. |
"Hit ball into pocket" once for him to touch it, and again to have Nancy pick up the ball. From there you can dust the ball for prints and then take the fingerprint. |
How do I obtain Nathan's fingerprint? |
Nathan's a helpful man. He's in the Conservatory, you only need to ask him for it. |
How do I obtain Kimi's fingerprint? |
Kimi's mug looks like an ideal place to lift her fingerprint from! You'll need to get it away from her first. |
The tea in Kimi's mug is still hot, she won't let you have it. How could you cool it down? |
Ice would be perfect to cool Kimi's tea down! Where are you going to get some ice? |
Go to the Kitchen and open the icebox. "Take ice". Go back to the Conservatory and put the ice in Kimi's mug. After that, she'll let you take her mug. |
How do I obtain Jack's fingerprint? |
Jack's making thumbprint cookies in the Kitchen. That sounds like a good place to start! |
"Take raw cookie". The thumbprint impression in the raw cookie is too soft to keep and analyze. What can you do about this? |
You'll need to cast an impression of the thumbprint in wax. Where have you seen wax? |
There's melted wax on the dining table from the candlesticks. Take that wax. |
You need to figure out a way to melt that wax. First you'll need an appropriate heat-resistant container. |
The pan isn't suitable for this, but check the other cupboards! |
There's a blue mug in the cupboard nearest the door to the hallway in the Kitchen. Take the mug and put the wax in it. Now you'll need to heat it! |
There are a few ways to do this, but the easiest is to put the mug on the stove in the Kitchen until the wax is melted. Then pour the wax into the raw cookie. The hot wax needs to be chilled to set it. |
Put the raw cookie into the icebox. All that's left is freeing the wax impression from the raw cookie! |
The best way is to eat the dough. :D |
How do I obtain Albert's fingerprint? |
Albert's drinking glass would be a great place to get his fingerprint. But he hasn't touched it yet! You need to make him thirsty. (Albert's in the Servant's Quarters) |
Albert would probably appreciate one of Jack's delicious cookies... |
BUT it's not thirst-provoking enough! Something on the kitchen island will help with that. |
Salt the cookie, and then give it to Albert. You'll be able to dust the glass and lift the fingerprint after that. |
Once you've obtained all the fingerprints, "Compare fingerprints" to progress to Chapter 4. |
How do I thoroughly investigate the Jetty scene? |
Starting with "look" will give you a good starting point for what to look at and examine. |
Examine the liquid, scuffs, and shoeprints |
You can also obtain fingerprints from the decanter and glass! |
How do I thoroughly investigate the scene north of the Jetty? |
Starting with "look" will give you a good starting point for what to look at and examine. |
There are two areas to investigate in this scene.the stuff in the southern part of the path and the stuff in the eastern part of the path. |
Examine the shoeprints and scuffs in the southern and eastern parts of the path. |
"Examine hair", and take it. |
How do I thoroughly investigate the Smokehouse scene? |
Starting with "look" will give you a good starting point for what to look at and examine. |
Examine the button. If you've looked Corvus before this, you'll identify it as his button. Take the button. You can look at Corvus after this, too. |
You can even dust the button for fingerprints! |
Examine shoeprints and scuffs. |
Open the door and enter the Smokehouse. Nathan will shoo you away. |
How to I obtain everyone's shoe sizes? |
How do I obtain Nathan's shoe size? |
Where have you seen Nathan walk around, on softer ground? |
Go to the Bridge and walk to the right side of it. Examine the shoeprints. |
How do I obtain Jack's shoe size? |
Where have you seen Jack walk around, on softer ground? |
Go to the Bridge and walk to the right side of it. Examine the shoeprints. |
How do I obtain Evan's shoe size? |
Where have you seen boot being stored in the lodge? |
The Mudroom has some boots in it. |
Examine men's boots. You'll obtain Evan's shoe size and Jack's shoe size (if you haven't already). |
Examine women's boots. You'll obtain Margot's shoe size (if you haven't already by examining the shoes in her walk-in closet). |
How do I obtain Corvus' shoe size? |
Try looking around in the bedroom he's staying in (Guest Bedroom 2). |
Examine the shoes by the right-hand bed in Guest Bedroom 2. |
How do I obtain Kimi's shoe size? |
Where have you seen Kimi walk around, on softer ground? |
Try looking around the waterfall to the southwest, where you saw her looking at the cormorants. |
Examine the shoeprints there. |
How do I obtain Nessa's shoe size? |
Where have you seen Nessa walk around that might leave an impression? |
Maybe on a cushy carpet? |
Like in the Study, from Chapter 4 onwards? |
Examine the papers on the floor in the Study. Nessa has stepped all over them with her shoes. If you witnessed her do this (at the beginning of Chapter 4, before finding Jack and Nathan at the Bridge), you will know that the shoe prints belong to Nessa. Otherwise, if you have Kimi's shoe size, Nancy will be able to deduce that this is Nessa's shoe size. |
How do I obtain Albert's shoe size? |
Albert unpacked his clothes etc. in Chapter 1. |
Go to Albert's bedroom (Servant's Quarters on the lodge map). Find those shoes! |
Open the cupboard and examine the shoes. |
Once you've successfully investigated the Jetty and Smokehouse scenes, return to the Smokehouse and enter it. Nathan will let you investigate the Smokehouse interior. |
Is there anything I can miss BEFORE I go return to the Smokehouse and enter it? |
You can check on how Ranger Murdoch is settling in on the second floor of the lodge. |
Enter the Linen closet and stumble upon the ranger. Follow him to Albert's bedroom (Servant's Quarters) and "listen with glass" to their conversation. After this, find the ranger in Spare Room. You can now tell him about some of your findings! |
Tell Ranger about Margot's death. You can refer to Chapter 4 and the heading "Can I miss anything in the beginning of Chapter 4?" for details on how to thorough examine Margot's body before telling Ranger Murdoch aboutt this. |
Tell Ranger about investigation. |
You can also visit Kimi in Guest Bedroom 1 and "look at sketchbook". |
How do I thoroughly investigate the Smokehouse interior? |
Starting with "look" will give you a good starting point for what to look at and examine. |
Examine the floor. |
Examine the wall. You'll need identify the symbol. |
Smell or taste the symbol. |
Examine the table. |
Dust the almond fragments for fingerprints |
Examine almond fragments. |
Take fingerprints from almond pieces. |
Take almond fragments. |
You can now leave the Smokehouse! |
Once you've successfully investigated the Smokehouse interior, go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan" to share your findings. You will then be told to meet them at the Carriage house. |
Is there anything I can miss BEFORE I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"? |
It would be a good idea to check on Corvus and Nessa. Where are they? |
They're in Margot's walk-in closet. You can eavesdrop on them from the Boudoir. You're given the objective to search Corvus' satchel in his bedroom (Guest Bedroom 2). Go there and try opening his satchel. You'll then get the objective to search for the key. |
There are plenty of places to search, though you only need to search 5 places. |
Search rug. |
Search bookshelf. |
Search left bed. |
Search right bed. |
Search desk. |
You can also search: Chair, crate, trash, drawers, pencil cup, and table. |
Once you've completed your search, you realize Corvus must have the key on him. You've got to figure out how to get it! |
If the key is in one of his pockets, maybe you can figure out how to get him to change his clothes. |
Go to a bathroom and fill the mug or glass with water. |
Spill the water on Corvus. You'll get a short cutscene of him leaving to change clothes. You can now go back to the bedroom and search the wet clothes. |
Take the key, unlock the satchel, and search the satchel. |
Take the will and examine it. |
Take the report and examine it. |
You can then close the satchel, lock it, and return the key. |
Is there anything ELSE I can miss BEFORE "Talk to Nathan" in the Study? |
This is a good time to ask Jack and Nathan about things you've learned about, before "Talk to Nathan" progresses the game! |
Ask Jack about almonds. |
Ask Jack about hallongrotta. |
Ask Nathan about ranger's meeting (about why he was absent from the meeting with Ranger Murdoch). |
Ask Nathan about report. |
Ask Jack about garlic (if you haven't already). |
Ask Jack about allergy (if you haven't already). |
Ask Nathan about will (this will give you a new objective: Find Nessa's ruby brooch in Margot's walk-in closet). |
If you don't know the contents of the curio cabinet and want to find out how you can learn about them, read the next line below. |
Any time before Chapter 3, examine the curio cabinet to see its contents. During or after Chapter 3, examine the curio cabinet to see what's missing. The next line below is another question you can ask Nathan if so. If you want to keep this information hidden for how, you can "talk to Nathan" to progress the game! |
Ask Nathan about steins. |
You can now to to Nathan (or Jack) to progress the game! |
Is there anything I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"? |
You can go to Margot's walk-in closet to look for Nessa's ruby brooch. |
Be thorough in your search! Leave no stone (or hat) unturned! |
Once you've found the brooch, you can do some informative things with it. |
Dust the brooch for fingerprints. |
Examine the brooch. |
Take brooch fingerprints. |
Rub brooch on plate. |
Is there anything ELSE I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"? |
You can check on Albert in his bedroom (Servant's Quarters on the lodge map). |
Albert's left his room in disarray. Time to take a look around! Particularly at things that have changed or seem disturbed. "Look floor" is also useful. |
Examine the clothes. |
Take the ticket stub. Dust the stub for fingerprints. Examine the stub! |
Search the left desk drawer. |
Take the cigar butt. Examine the cigar butt. Dust the butt for fingerprints. |
Examine the books. |
Take papers. |
Apply soot ot the papers. Examine the papers. |
Take tape. Examine tape. |
Look under bed. |
Take cylinder. Dust dynamite for fingerprints. |
Now would be a good time to check the Linen Closet for more of Albert's things. After all, he was storing some items in the blue trunk! |
Search the blue trunk. |
Take the bullet and take the blasting cap. You can dust both for fingerprints. Examine the blasting cap after you've dusted it. |
There's something else here that might come in handy later... |
The padlock! You can take it. You can also do a few others things with it. |
Dust the padlock for fingerprints, take the padlock fingerprint, and compare fingerprints to find out who it belongs to. |
You're all set! It's time to proceed to the Carriage house and Chapter 6! |
How can I gain access to the mine? |
There are two ways. One way is if you were thorough in the lodge during the last section of Chapter 6 (Method #1), the other is if you've missed picking up a couple items (Method #2). |
What two items do I need for Method #1? |
One item you need for Method #1 is the "cylinder". |
The other item you need for Method #1 is the blasting cap. |
If you don't have either of these items, please refer to Method #2! If you'd like to try Method #1, restore a saved game in Chapter 5 after you've talked to Nathan in the Study, but before you meet Jack, Nathan, and the ranger in the Carriage house. And take a peek at the Chapter 5 hints, particularly those under the heading "Is there anything ELSE I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"?" |
Now that you have both of the required items, read on! |
You'll be trying to blast the mine entrance open. Take a look around for other items will help with this! |
Take wire and plunger (you can try dusting them for fingerprints too). |
The wire, plunger, blasting cap, and dynamite must be properly assembled to create an explosive device. |
Attach the blasting cap to the dynamite. |
Attach the wire to the blasting cap. |
You'll need to cut the wire and attach the cut end to the plunger. |
If you don't see anything suitable in the area, you could try asking Jack! |
After Jack gives you the wirecutters, cut the wire. Then attach the wire to the plunger. The explosive is complete! Now you have to set it up. |
Put the dynamite in the rubble. |
You'll probably want to take the plunger a safe distance away before you push the plunger. Try "take plunger behind rock" and then "push plunger". |
Enter the mine. |
Method #2: |
"Dig with trowel." |
Is there anything I can miss AFTER I clear the rubble from the mine entrance and before I enter the mine? |
This would be a good time to ask Jack some questions before you enter the mine. |
Ask Jack about the brooch. |
Examine the brooch. It looks a bit different now! You can dust the brooch for fingerprints if you haven't already. |
Rub salt on brooch. |
Rub river sample on brooch. |
Ask Jack about diamonds. |
Even though rescuing Evan is a matter of some urgency, you can still do a few mineralogy-related things: |
The rubble around the mine entrance might be mineralogically relevant to your fieldwork. |
Examine rubble. Take rubble sample. Look at the rubble sample, and then examine it. |
You can also rub the rubble sample on the plate, and then the brooch. |
You can now enter the mine! |
I'm now inside the mine! How do I proceed safely? |
You need to figure out which way to go to continue further into the mine. |
"Look" is a good start. |
Looking at the path might yield something useful. |
Examining the path would be even more useful! |
Examining the shoeprints you see on the path as you move along will help you follow the proper footsteps. |
Move to the eastern edge of the room and "examine shoeprints". You can then proceed safely to the next room to the east. |
Is there anything I can miss in this area? |
Move close to the jaw crusher and take a look! |
There are discarded rocks near the jaw crusher. |
You can look at the discarded rocks, examine them, take them, rub them on the plate and rub them on the brooch. |
There are coarse rocks near the jaw crusher. |
You can look at the coarse rocks, examine them, take them, rub them on the plate and rub them on the brooch. |
If you walk to a spot between the shovel and the large, leaning pillar on the right, you'll see something red and sparkly! Take a look! |
There are a few things you can do with the red crystal... |
Take the crystal sample, look at it, and examine it. |
Rub the crystal sample on the plate, and on the brooch. |
You're now ready to proceed to the east! |
The Cavern. How can I proceed safely? |
"Look" will give you some ideas about what to do. |
You need to take Corvus out of the equation somehow. |
Perhaps a distraction in a direction away from you? |
You can throw something down a passage. |
You can throw one of your samples... |
But there's another way! Look around you. |
You'll want to be more concealed before you try to take a rock in this area, or when throwing it. |
Walk behind the large boulder until Nancy indicates she's properly concealed! You can also "hide behind boulder." |
Take a rock. |
You can do other things with the rock before throwing it! |
Take rock, look at rock, examine rock. |
You can also rub the rock on the plate and the brooch. |
I can now proceed safely. What next? |
You can try to untie Evan! |
...Or depending on what you know, you could try something else! |
If you know that Evan is allergic to almonds (based on past gameplay), you could try... |
Take the almonds. |
Uh-oh. I'm now in a slightly time-sensitive situation! |
Nessa is coming for you! But the parser (or \ which is the pause button) will pause the game, so start typing something if you want limitless time to think about what to do next. |
You can check your notebook for a suggestion of what you can try. It's not a literal instruction, though! |
Push the table at Nessa. There's another option with the same outcome. |
You can also try taking the lantern. |
A dramatic close-up! What now? |
You have two choices here. Choose wisely! |
You can just leave. Or... |
You can save Nessa. |
I've made my choice. What should I do next? |
Check your notebook! Did you get a new objective? If so, the details for how to achieve it are below: |
It's possible that you lack the appropriate item to succeed at this objective. If so, you can just "stand" and proceed with the game (the ending will be different). |
The item is back at the lodge, obtainable during Chapter 5. |
The item is obtainable in Chapter 5 after Albert has fled, leaving his room (Servant's Quarters) and the Linen Closet a mess. |
The item is in the Linen Closet when the blue trunk is open. |
The item is the padlock! |
You need to padlock Nessa to something. |
You need to padlock Nessa to something nearby and isn't easily moveable. |
Padlock Nessa to the wheelbarrow! Onward to Chapter 7! |
Bedtime Quiz! |
Question 1 |
Did Margot have an accomplice in the ruby brooch theft? |
You could learn more about the brooch theft if you found it and were able to examine it! |
The brooch is hidden somewhere in the lodge. |
You can find it during Chapter 5, after Nessa and Corvus have fled. |
Check Chapter 5, under the heading "Is there anything I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"?" for details. |
Answer: Yes |
Question 2 |
Who was the accomplice in the ruby brooch theft? |
You could learn more about the brooch theft if you found it and were able to examine it! Check Chapter 5, under the heading "Is there anything I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"?" for details. |
Answer: Jack |
You can ask Jack about the brooch at the mine entrance in Chapter 6. |
Question 3 (If you don't know the contents of the curio cabinet, you won't get this question). The first hint for this question will be how you can activate this question: |
Any time before Chapter 3, examine the curio cabinet to see its contents. During or after Chapter 3, examine the curio cabinet to see what's missing. The next line below is the actual Bedtime Quiz question. |
Who stole the pair of antique silver steins? |
Answer: Margot |
Question 4 (If you don't know the contents of the curio cabinet, you won't get this question). See Question 3 for how to activate this question: |
Who was the accomplice in the theft of the antique silver steins? |
You'll have to ask someone about this... Perhaps after the thief can no longer be charged with the crime? |
Ask Nathan about the steins, after Margot has died. |
Answer: Nathan |
Question 5 |
Who was the imposter at Crimson lodge? |
You might have some suspicions. But do you have any evidence? Refer to Chapter 5 under the heading "Is there anything ELSE I can miss AFTER I go to the Study and "Talk to Nathan"?" for details. |
He was also inexplicably studying the glacial erratic boulder. |
Albert is the imposter! Answer: Albert |
Question 6 |
What was Kimi’s true goal? |
Kimi was sketching some interesting things in her sketchbook... |
You can "look at sketchbook" at the very beginning of the game. You can do it again at the beginning of Chapter 5. |
Albert has his suspicions about Kimi. You can hear him mentioning this to Nessa in the gazebo in Chapter 4, after you've found Jack and Nathan the first time. |
Did you see the confrontation between Kimi and Albert in Chapter 4? You can see it after you've found Nathan the second time and then visit Guest Bedroom 1. |
You can also retrieve Kimi's map from the fireplace. |
You'll have to put out the fire, first! |
You can fill your glass or mug in a bathroom, the kitchen, or using the pump beside the Garden Shed. |
After you douse Kimi's map with water, you can take it and examine it. |
...But her true goal is birding, for real! Answer: Birding |
Question 7 |
Were Evan Richards and Nathan Cardinal friends or enemies? |
Nathan was definitely doing some scheming. At the beginning of Chapter 1, before dinner, he has a conversation with Evan in the Conservatory that you can eavesdrop on. |
Immediately after the dinner in Chapter 1 you can hear a conversation between Nathan and Evan in the Study. There are two different ways to do this. |
One way is to enter the Study and "hide behind tapestry." |
The other way is to clear the plates in Dining room while Evan and Nathan are sitting at the table, to make them move into the study. You can then walk up to the Study door and "listen with glass." |
Were you privy to the meeting Nathan had with Albert in the Boathouse in Chapter 4, after you found him the second time? |
Based on that meeting, it seems like he's most interesting in protecting the land from mining. |
Nathan did, at considerable risk to himself, reveal to Ranger Murdoch that he snuck off the reservation to help find and rescue Evan. |
Taking all of that into consideration, you can conclude... |
Answer: Friends |
Question 8 |
What were Jack and Nathan trying to conceal? |
Did you listen to the conversation between Jack and Nathan at the beginning of Chapter 5? If not, refer to "Am I able to listen to Jack and Nathan's conversation during this bridge scene?" in Chapter 4. |
After their conversation is over, leave the area and go to the Smokehouse. |
"Look ground". Open the door to the Smokehouse, enter it, and "examine ground." |
"Take salt" and then "examine salt". |
You can rub the salt on your plate. But as Nancy observes: If you were looking for other minerals, you'll need to find a way to separate those from the salt. |
You can try melting the salt! |
Water will melt the salt. |
You can fill the mug or glass with water from a bathroom or the kitchen, or the pump beside the Garden Shed, and then put the salt in. You can then dump the water (in a sink or the ground if you're outside) and be left with some minerals that aren't salt. |
You can rub the salt on the plate. |
You can rub salt on the brooch, too... If you have it! Review the hints for Question 1 to learn how to obtain it. |
There are also samples you can obtain in Chapter 6. Even in times of urgency, Nancy finds it hard to resist doing a bit of fieldwork! |
Refer to Chapter 6 under the heading "Is there anything I can miss in this area?" for details. |

That conversation between Jack and Margot behind the Boudoir door at the end of Chapter 1 sounded rather incriminating! |
If you found the silver key, you might be able to get to the bottom of this. |
Margot's got the silver key. |
You can obtain the key from Margot at the start of Chapter 4. |
You need to "examine Margot", "search robe" and then "take key" when you're in the Root Cellar. Now you need find what it unlocks! |
The key unlocks the vanity in the Boudoir. Unlock the drawers, and then search them. |
The kit is full of interesting items and things to reveal. For Question 10, it's necessary to connect Jack with the kit so that you can confront him about it. |
Dust the handle of the kit for fingerprints, then examine the handle. There's plenty more to discover, too ( Refer to "Can I miss anything else in this chapter?" for the rest)! Go to Guest Bedroom 2 after you've found the fingerprints and "Ask Jack about kit." You can also ask him that at a later time, when you find him. |
